No big bang

About 1:00 this afternoon, robot_grrl called and asked if I'd heard about the F-18 crash. Up to then, I hadn't, but I did do some checking.

An F-18 that developed (at least according to the reports I read and listened to after getting off the phone) engine trouble about 100 miles out into the Pacific was heading in to make an emergency landing at MCAS Miramar, but crashed into houses about 2 - 2.5 miles from the end of the runway. The pilot ejected safely, but at least according to the BBC report I read this evening, three people on the ground were killed.

I was probably 3 miles away (I've consulted the map since my reply to qnofhrt), and didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. Of course working two miles north of the end of the strip at Miramar, I'm used to hearing jets and helicopters overhead. Tara and Derrick were in Oceanside 15-20 miles to the north and well out of harms way.

From August until October we were living in an apartment that was also about 2.5 miles from the crash site (more due north rather than north-east to work), and we still have a mail box at a UPS store about a mile west of the crash site. But I don't visit the mail box mid-day, and rarely on Mondays. (I take the train Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and check the box on Tuesdays and Fridays usually after work).

Beyond watching some streaming video feeds at work, the only thing I could personally observe was a single news helicopter hovering in the area where I suspect that the crash was when I left work about 3:45 this afternoon.
